Blessings in a Backpack

No Child should have to go to school hungry, but it happens every day all across Louisville. Blessings in a Backpack sends backpacks home filled with of food for hungry elementary school children who may not have any or enough food on the weekends.

Blessings in a Backpack is a program designed to help meet the nutritional needs of children, ultimately impacting their educational success.

Volunteers in cooperation with school officials distribute backpacks filled with enough non-perishable food for the weekend (six meals) for at-risk students. These students are participants in the government subsidized free or reduced-fee hot lunch program. Students that are receiving free or reduced-fee lunch at school are from families in every neighborhood who, for various reasons, have an income at or below the poverty level.

The goal of the Blessings in a Backpack program is to keep these students from going hungry on the weekends and to remove barriers to academic success. The program strives to generate public awareness on the issue of childhood hunger and is working to expand the program across to all 50 states.

Christ Church United Methodist is committed to provide funding to initiate this program at Breckinridge-Franklin Elementary School, located on Payne Street in the Irish Hill neighborhood.
