Scouting Programs
|
The Scouting program is alive and well at Christ Church United Methodist. The church sponsors Cub Scout Pack 317, Boy Scout Troop 317, and two Venturing crews for young adults. These programs serve a large number of young people from the church family and the surrounding community.
Cub Scout Pack 317
Cub Scouting is a family- and neighborhood-centered program for boys in grades 1 through 5. The program focuses on building caring, nurturing relationships between boys and their parents, adult leaders, and friends.
Members are assigned to a den, usually a group of six to eight boys. First-grade boys (Tiger Cubs) meet twice a month, while Wolf Cub Scouts (second graders), Bear Cub Scouts (third graders), and Webelos Scouts (fourth and fifth graders) meet weekly or biweekly. Once a month, all of the dens and family members gather for a pack meeting at the church.
Other activities include family camping, service projects, Pinewood Derby races, and more.
For more information about Pack 317, call Cubmaster Steve Wagner at 241-9045 (home) or 425-1995 (work).
Boy Scout Troop 317
Boy Scouting, which is open to boys ages 11 through 17, develops character, citizenship, and personal fitness through a vigorous program of outdoor activities.
Members elect their own leaders and form patrols of six to eight boys. The troop meets each Thursday from 7:30-8:45 p.m. at the Amos-Johns-Davis Scout House, located just behind Christ Church. In addition, the troop holds a monthly outing, attends summer camp annually, and plans high-adventure trips for older Scouts every two years. Recent troop outings have included rappelling, caving, a trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, and a bicycle trip to Bardstown, Ky., and back.
For more information about Troop 317, call Scoutmaster Dave Vittitow at 412-7387. You can also visit the troop's Web site at www.eaglebook.com/troop317.
Venturing Crews
Venturing is the young-adult division of the Boy Scouts of America. This unique co-educational program allows young people ages 14 through 20 to explore specific interest areas in a values-based setting. Venturing’s purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.
Christ Church sponsors two separate Venturing units. Crew 317 focuses on high adventure and social activities and is an outgrowth of Troop 317; it meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Crew 719 (Venturing with Computers) meets in the church’s computer lab each Wednesday. Members of this group learn more about computers and participate in technology-related service projects.
For more information on Crew 317, call Advisor Don Kornick at 241-2813 or visit the crew's Web site at www.eaglebook.com/crew317. For more information on Crew 719 (Venturing with Computers), call Advisor Bill Bloom at 326-1374 or visit the crew's Web page at www.ccum.net/vwc/index.htm.
