Volunteers In Mission trip - July 14-22, 2001

Sandy Point, Abaco Island (Bahamas)

Lee looks tired before he even left town! Delayed for one day due to weather, the team stayed over in Palm Beach after leaving Louisville on July 14. When they finally arrived mid-afternoon on Sunday, they were at the wrong airport due to more problems with the weather. After several van transfers they finally arrived at their destination in Sandy Point, Abaco Island, in the middle of a rain storm.
The entire team stayed in a 3 bedroom house with only one toilet and one shower (there were 3 additional showers outside). Needless to say it was rather cramped and very hot. They slept on air mattresses, fighting off mosquitoes and sand fleas. Their job tasks included work on 3 houses: drywall, hanging doors, painting (LOTs of painting), etc.

full team photo (Lee missing) one of the houses the team helped restore Hello ? Hello ? Anyone there ?
the luxurious guest quarters    street in Sandy Point

father & son effort ok, grey or white ? which color is it supposed to be ? drywall mud is such fun did they paint the fan too or did it start out white ? local boy who befriended the team

Um, Jean, is there more paint on your arm than the post ?? you mean they didn't WANT it painted with brown & white stripes ? Mynette cleans up is that fan on ? it still feels hot!

The photo on the left shows where one person had been living for 2 years while waiting for his house to be rebuilt (photo on right):

finally, a home again

Between all the hours of hard labor, there were still a few chances for rest and fun:

hey Ted, open your eyes ! the welcoming committee ? maybe if I pretend I'm asleep they won't make me paint anymore. Gummy worms help Jerry celebrate his birthday
ok, so who's cooking dinner ??
Elbow Cay resort (team visited on their last day) team dinner, final night on Abaco team dinner, final night on Abaco
ya know, if we dip him in a tray he could paint the floor! hey, who tore out the last chapter ?? I'm too tired to read

And finally the team headed for home, along with a few souveneir bug bites.

pssssttt... Mynnette, you've got paint behind your ear! ready for the next trip ?? gee Ted, thanks for sharing this one with us!!
